Stella’s S.T.A.R.s is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting educators and helping children with autism achieve success by providing autism teaching competencies and vital resources for classrooms in Leon County.
WHO ARE WE?
WHAT IS AUTISM?
Autism is a bio-neurological disability that generally appears before the age of 3.
It impacts the typical development of the brain in the areas that affect social interaction,
communication skills, and cognitive function. Unlike popular belief,
autism is not a learning disability. No one child is alike.
Individuals with autism often suffer from numerous coexisting medical conditions such as:
- Fragile X
- Bowel disease
- Gastrointestinal/digestive disorders
- Persistent viral infections
- Feeding disorders
- Anxiety disorder
- Bipolar disorder
- Tourette Syndrome
- Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
- Sensory Processing Disorder
- Sleeping disorders
- Immune and autoimmune disorders
Autism costs a family
approximately $60,000 per
affected child each year.
Autism is the fastest growing
developmental disorder in the
U.S. yet it’s the least funded.
Recent study reports that 1 in 4o
kids in the U.S. are diagnosed
'If you have met one person with autism, then you have met one person with autism"
- Dr. Stephen Shore
WHY ARE WE NEEDED?
Early intervention is crucial for a child with autism and can reduce the cost of long-term care by 2/3. Children with autism require specific instruction from qualified educators for 30 hours each week, sometimes longer, beginning as early as 2 years of age.
Incidences of autism are on the rise, guaranteeing a general education teacher will have at least one student with autism in their classroom yet teachers are facing the challenge without proper training. Due to the lack of proper training and understanding of autism we are also finding a rise in teacher abuse on children with autism. Autism is a lifelong disorder with no cure. However, this does not mean nothing can be done. Providing this critical training not only helps the affected student achieve success, it promotes a successful environment for all students. With the rate of autism at 1 in 40 and 90% of capable individuals with autism unemployed or underemployed, this is an issue that deeply affects us all as a society.
More than 95% of children with
a disability receive some or all of their
education in regular classrooms.
Lifetime societal care
costs for a person with autism
is in excess of $2 million.
The most important thing every parent and teacher needs to know about their student with autism: his or hers success depends upon yours, upon how successfully you collaborate as a team member with the common goals of enabling the child to meet his or her full potential.
- Ellen Notbohm
WHAT ARE WE UP TO?
Since March 2017, Stella’s STARs have providing autism training for more than 300 teachers and parents from 20 different schools throughout Leon County.
In June 2017, we started our RockSTAR program which recognizes a different child and their family’s story each month on social media. This program has provided the opportunity to showcase the child and the family, and not the diagnosis. It has created a platform for the public to get to know these children and learn about all the wonderful individual qualities they possess! The focus of the RockSTAR program is celebrating and encouraging their interests and enthusiasm as we believe that empowering their specific interests can lead to future jobs and careers. Since June we have donated three enthusiasm packages and will continue to donate packages each month.
Most recently, we have started a quarterly program called STARt with Confidence that targets teen girls with autism. Females with autism have an ability to mask their struggles and blend in with the crowd. This ability creates severely low self-esteem and anxiety following them into their teenage years and adulthood. These struggles are often ignored or go unnoticed making them especially vulnerable to predators. Something we have always and will always want for our daughter, Stella, is to have the confidence to be unapologetically herself. We also want this for all females. Thus, STARt with Confidence was born! We hope to provide these young women with the building blocks they need to nourish the self-confidence and self-love they rightfully deserve. We intend to have events ranging from social skills, peer relationship building, self defense, self care, and much more! Please check out our STARt with Confidence page or social media to find out more about past and upcoming events!
